Status and way-forward in breeding potato (Solanum tuberosum) for resistance to late blight

چکیده
Improving host resistance to late blight (Phytophthora infestans) has been a major concern of potato breeders since the Irish famine 1840s. Since then, number resistant (Solanum tuberosum L.) cultivars have developed using both conventional and molecular techniques. However, did not last long broke down due emergence more virulent races Phytophthora infestans. This perspective paper presents status sources blight, defence mechanism against pathogen genes mapped, cloned, transferred cultivated potato. Considerable progress made in all aspects breeding for blight. critical appraisal suggests continued need identify new resistance, transfer from diverse stacking them maximum into individual plants. Other strategies combat this dreaded disease are also discussed.

Gene RB cloned from Solanum bulbocastanum confers broad spectrum resistance to potato late blight.
Late blight, caused by the oomycete pathogen Phytophthora infestans, is the most devastating potato disease in the world. Control of late blight in the United States and other developed countries relies extensively on fungicide application. We previously demonstrated that the wild diploid potato species Solanum bulbocastanum is highly resistant to all known races of P. infestans. Potato germpla...
متن کاملRpi-vnt1.1, a Tm-2(2) homolog from Solanum venturii, confers resistance to potato late blight.
Despite the efforts of breeders and the extensive use of fungicide control measures, late blight still remains a major threat to potato cultivation worldwide. The introduction of genetic resistance into cultivated potato is considered a valuable method to achieve durable resistance to late blight. Here, we report the identification and cloning of Rpi-vnt1.1, a previously uncharacterized late-bl...

Phosphite (Phi) has been recommended to enhance plant resistance against Phytophthora spp. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of calcium phosphite (PhiCa) and potassium phosphite (PhiK) under field conditions, taking into account physiological parameters, performance and protection against late blight in the foliage of two potato cultivars, and comparing these results to contr...
متن کاملTargeted and Untargeted Approaches Unravel Novel Candidate Genes and Diagnostic SNPs for Quantitative Resistance of the Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) to Phytophthora infestans Causing the Late Blight Disease
The oomycete Phytophthora infestans causes late blight of potato, which can completely destroy the crop. Therefore, for the past 160 years, late blight has been the most important potato disease worldwide. The identification of cultivars with high and durable field resistance to P. infestans is an objective of most potato breeding programs. This type of resistance is polygenic and therefore qua...
متن کاملIdentification of Novel Associations of Candidate Genes with Resistance to Late Blight in Solanum tuberosum Group Phureja
The genetic basis of quantitative disease resistance has been studied in crops for several decades as an alternative to R gene mediated resistance. The most important disease in the potato crop is late blight, caused by the oomycete Phytophthora infestans. Quantitative disease resistance (QDR), as any other quantitative trait in plants, can be genetically mapped to understand the genetic archit...
